This guide shows you what happens to your Stripe account when the restaurant changes owner, and what to do on each side. Connecting Stripe in the first place is covered in how to set up your Stripe account.

Before you start

This article is for restaurants that already have the Online payment add-on active with a Stripe account connected. If you never connected Stripe, there is nothing to move on the payment side: hand over the Resos account on its own, as described in transfer your Resos account to another email.

Resos cannot move a Stripe account from one owner or company to another. There is no transfer option in the system, so the two sides have to be handled separately.

On the Resos side

Handing the restaurant profile to a new owner is a normal user change. The current owner adds the new person under MenuSettings & add-onsAccountUsers, then transfers ownership to them. Transfer your Resos account to another email walks through it step by step. This moves the Resos account only, and changes nothing about Stripe.

On the Stripe side

Who owns a Stripe account is Stripe’s decision, not ours. If the person who set up Stripe has left and nobody can log in, contact Stripe support directly. Resos cannot grant access to a Stripe account, reset its login, or change whose business is registered on it.

Starting over with a new Stripe account

If Stripe cannot restore access, or the business entity itself is changing, the practical route is to disconnect the old account in Resos and run the Stripe setup again for the new owner. Read how to disable or disconnect Stripe first, because the old account keeps the history and the refund rights for everything it collected.

Deal with these before you disconnect:

  • Refunds you still owe. Payments taken through the old Stripe account can only be refunded from the Stripe Dashboard of that old account. Once Resos points at a different Stripe account, the refund button in Resos works for the new account only.
  • Bookings waiting on a payment. A guest who has not paid yet cannot complete the payment while no Stripe account is connected.
  • Saved cards for no-show fees. Those cards belong to the old Stripe account, so they cannot be charged through the new one. The charge attempt fails, the booking is marked with a failed payment, and we email you so you can follow it up with the guest. Ask affected guests to book again once the new account is live if you still want the cover.

Nothing is refunded or canceled automatically by a disconnect, and your old Stripe account is not closed. See what happens to existing prepayments and no-show fees for the full picture.

What this article does not cover

Closing the restaurant instead of handing it over is a different job: see how to close or delete your Resos account. Payouts, verification requirements and anything else inside Stripe itself are handled by Stripe support.

If you are in the middle of a handover and are not sure what to do with the payments side, email us at hi@resos.com before you disconnect anything, and we will go through it with you.
